Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Automobiles, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.

Law enforcement say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued liquid.

The liquid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Officers then found multiple other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials state preliminary tests suggest the fluid was probably blood from a person.

"Currently there is no clue as to where it came from; investigators are not yet informed of any harm in connection with the incident," they added.

Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to solve the case" and have asked to the residents for details.

A high-ranking representative commented the incident rendered him stunned and required to be addressed promptly.

"This event affects the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he stated on social media, referring to the killing of nine people by a gunman aiming at residents of migrant background in February 2020.
