Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had netted only a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.

Spurs: Spurs travel to St James' Park on late October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
