Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.
Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like typical physical horror, but within Together lies a deep contemplation about how we choose to love one another.
A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities
Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.
The story begins when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.
The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.
Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.
Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
Both characters confront the kind of problems that come with most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.
Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
