Shifting from Praise to Rage: Right-wing Reaction to Epstein File Release is Divided.
Conservative responses to the limited disclosure of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Administration Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo outlining the redaction procedure.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and image are visible in some of the materials, the widespread black blocks prompt serious concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased openness.
“People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and suggested that a future legislature may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Disclosure
However, a segment of conservative commentators and Trump allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
But some do not, including high-profile figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to go on the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left wrongly accused Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these documents for months only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Muted
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was relatively subdued following the release, particularly when compared with the vociferous calls for action that preceded the legislative approval to enact a law mandating the files' release.
The commentator, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were given physical binders of materials that included little new data.
