Revitalized Medvedev Claims First Trophy in Over Two Years
Nineteen of Medvedev's twenty-one victories have been earned on hard surfaces
A comeback Medvedev claimed his maiden title for nearly 30 months with a win over Frenchman Moutet in the Almaty Open title decider.
The athlete, a former world number one, has experienced a torrid year, achieving just one win at the major tournaments and suffering a setback at the American major.
The player's inconsistency on the tennis tour - and difficulties with his serving in specific - led to him falling of the top ten and eventually parting ways with long-term mentor his previous coach.
Now working with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, Medvedev has gradually improved in the past month - peaking in a closely contested three-set triumph over opponent Corentin Moutet.
This marks the player's initial championship following the Italian tournament and initial on a hardcourt from March of 2023.
The win also signifies he has achieved 21 championships at twenty-one various events.
"It's the first time I have attended a tournament with my two daughters together, so to win a title is really nice," said world number 14 Medvedev.
"This championship is in dedication of my younger daughter Victoria, because the first title I won when my child her name was born was for her."
The tennis star, the past champion, had lost his last six finals, including in Halle in the past months.
Medvedev's counter-punching play style and frequent outbursts on the playing surface had prompted commentators to doubt if his capacity to play at the elite level was concluded.
However the 29-year-old has implemented adjustments in recent weeks, making an effort to approach the net and perform aggressively, supported by an better serving game.
Medvedev recovered from a disadvantage in the initial set against the tricky Moutet, winning four of the concluding five games to gain the advantage.
Both players traded break points in the middle set before the challenger, striving for his initial tour title, seized the initiative to create a decider.
He rescued four initial opportunities in a tight final set before the Russian broke to 15 to close out the victory.
Appropriately, the winner secured the title with a shot at the front of the court, with Moutet failing to control a shot after a lengthy match.
