Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets
Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using such drugs must be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the way of the jabs explains the heightened regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
