Department of Justice Joins Legal Challenge to Block the State of California's Congressional Map
The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in federal court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
